Cottingley Primary – Dens and ‘States Of Matter’ – Case Study

6 children from Cottingley Primary In front of there den

Year 3 and 4 children from Cottingley Primary joined us at Howsham Mill in January 2020 for a fabulous day building dens and learning about changes of state.  There were nearly 90 children, so they came on 3 consecutive days.  We were very lucky with the weather – the dens were excellent though, so we would have had plenty of shelter if the weather had been poor!

Children spent the mornings building shelters.  Then at lunchtime, we roasted marshmallows over the fire to make s’mores.  Finally, we spent the afternoons learning about changes of state.  Children gathered around the fire to watch a block of ice melting.  This gave them the opportunity to see the solid ice, melt into a liquid and then evaporate into a gas.  We melted chocolate over the fire, mixed the melted chocolate with rice crispies and let the liquid chocolate change state into lovely solid rice crispie cakes!
