Gears, Levers and Pulleys
Explore Gears, Levers and Pulleys.
Addressing Y5 science forces objectives, children will model gears, explore plastic gears and make small gears. Children will lift buckets of water using pulleys. Levers will be covered in the afternoon when children will use planks of wood and bricks to get a basic understanding of mechanical advantage.
Learning objective: to recognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.
Typical plan for the day:
10.00am – 10.45am – welcome / tour / health and safety
10.45 – 11.30 – Gears: model gears, explore plastic gears and make small gears
