Gears, Levers and Pulleys

Lift water using pulleys, lift bricks using levers, model gears with clay.
Learning objective: to recognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect (Y5, science, forces).
Typical plan for the day:
10.00am – 10.45am – welcome / tour / health and safety
10.45 – 11.30 – Pulleys: lift buckets of water using pulleys
11.30 – 12.15 – Levers: use planks of wood and bricks to get a basic understanding of mechanical advantage
12.15 – 1.00pm – lunch to include s’mores cooked over the fire
1.00pm – 1.45pm – Gears: model gears, explore plastic gears and make small gears
1.45pm – plenary and walk back to bus
