Adaptation (Evolution and Inheritance) – UKS2

Children explore adaptation, focusing on camouflage, and how adaptation helps animals to survive and reproduce.
Typical day:
10.00am – 10.45am – welcome / tour / health and safety
10.45am – 11.15am – Camouflage caterpillars game in 2 different habitats. Write conclusion linking camouflage to adaptation.
11.15 – 12noon – Minibeast hunt. Record which minibeasts were found in which habitats, noting the colour of the minibeasts.
12noon – 1.00pm – lunch to include s’mores cooked over the fire
1.00pm – 1.45pm – Plant adaptation card sort and identify plants with adaptations.
1.45pm – plenary and walk back to bus
Possible learning objectives:
- identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution
