Habitats and minibeasts for KS1
Children look for minibeasts, write ‘habitat postcards’ and make minibeast caravans.
Learning objectives:
- identify and name a variety of common animals (minibeasts) (Y1, science, Animals, including Humans)
- identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other (Y2, science, Living things and their habitats)
- identify and name a variety of animals (minibeasts) in their habitats, including microhabitats (Y2, science, Living things and their habitats)
Typical day:
10.00am – 10.45am – welcome / tour / health and safety
10.45am – 11.30am – mini beast hunt – which creatures did you find in which habitats
11.30am – 12noon – habitat postcards – write the ‘address’ of the creature – describe the habitat and the ‘job’ of the animal (introduction to how living things depend on each other)
12noon – 1.00pm – lunch to include s’mores cooked over the fire
1.00pm – 1.45pm – make bug caravans
1.45pm – plenary and walk back to bus
