Seed Dispersal

This workshop should take place in the autumn, when there are seeds on the plants. Children use environmental art to represent the different parts of a plant, identify different seeds, collect data about different plants and carry out a spinner investigation to model seed dispersal.
10.00am – 10.30am – welcome / tour / health and safety
10.30am – 11.00am – use environmental art to represent the different parts of a plant
11.00am – 11.30am – Identification of plants / signs of autumn at Howsham Mill
11.30am – 12noon – survey (data collection) of different seeds
12noon – 1.00pm – lunch to include s’mores cooked over the fire
1.00pm – 1.45pm – seed dispersal – spinners activity
1.45pm – plenary and walk back to bus
Learning objectives:
- identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers (science, Y3, plants)
- explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including seed formation and seed dispersal (science, Y3, plants)
